Designed by the renowned architectural firm of Anshen and Allen, this home was constructed in 1962 by legendary developer Joseph Eichler.

After assisting with an addition to this home over twenty years ago, JANUS was approached by its new owners to improve upon an earlier kitchen remodel. Rather than recreating the original kitchen, the owners wished for a modern refresh of the kitchen which drew upon the simplicity and clean lines of the home's mid-century roots.

The project began by removing an earlier replacement window which had concealed the large header beam and greatly reduced the size of the opening. The opening was enlarged to its previous dimension with the header beam once again exposed. At nearly 10 feet in width, the restoration of this feature restored the dramatic, light-filled space as it was originally intended.

The design approach for the kitchen was one that sought a restrained palette of high-quality materials and great precision in its execution.

The custom cabinetry was constructed by a master craftsman using matched grain walnut, and finished with simple, yet elegant solid-surface countertops. A recessed gas cooktop was chosen to maintain the strong horizonal character of the large island, used both for cooking and dining. Understated cabinetry hardware was selected to allow the subtlety of the design and craftsmanship to remain center stage. The back splash tile was chosen in part due its mid-century heritage, but also to provide a subtle but distinct counterpoint to white walls and ceilings.
