Project Scope:
Between the years 1947 and 1966, Joseph Eichler, founder and president of Eichler Homes, Inc., constructed thousands of mid-century modern style, middle-class homes for which he became widely known. Utilizing the talents of young and progressive architectural firms as Jones and Emmons, Anshen and Allen, and Claude Oakland, Eichler challenged the conventional practices of competing merchant builders and delivered a unique and dynamic product to buyers of modest means.
In 1960, Eichler began what would become the first of three residential housing tracts within the city of Orange, California - Fairhaven, Fairmeadow and Fairhills. Totaling 350 homes, the three tracts remain well preserved today and provide a glimpse into the unique vision of Joseph Eichler.
JANUS conducted a comprehensive field survey, documenting and evaluating the historic integrity of each of the subject properties. Using this data, JANUS prepared the nomination forms for designation of the three residential tracts. The nomination to the National Register of Historic Places recognizes the historical significance of the Fairhaven, Fairmeadow, and Fairhills developments for both their distinctive architecture and their unique contribution to mid-century modern residential development.
