Completed in 1924, The Ark is a rustic beach cottage situated upon a craggy bluff in Laguna Beach. Designed by architect Jean Luis Egasse, the home is perhaps most notable in its reminiscence of an old weathered sailing vessel left stranded upon the shore. Its character could not be more appropriate to its distinct seaside location, perched upon a rocky ledge just above the vast Pacific Ocean. It’s use of natural materials, absence of applied ornamentation and rustic style all convey a hand-crafted feeling, securely positioning the home as one of the finest expressions of the Arts and Crafts ideals in Southern California.

With the honorable intentions of acting as the best stewards possible, the owners engaged JANUS seeking guidance on how to best preserve this important landmark. JANUS began the project by preparing a Historic Structure Report. The purpose of that report was to better understand the property's history and the current condition of the home, all in support of determining the best path forward.

After conducting extensive research into both the home's architect and history, the property was digitally scanned and the existing conditions of the home were thoroughly documented. Throughout the process, JANUS collaborated with a team of well-qualified specialists. Structural engineers with extensive experience with historic properties conducted studies of the home in order to develop specialized treatments which would improve those systems while preserving the unique character of the home. A team of materials conservators was also consulted to better understand the effects of the home's coastal environment, and to prepare treatments which would maintain the home's weathered appearance.
